Dear Walter,

As some of you know, I started a new company doing property management, rentals, and home inspections in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific Coast of Mexico on the first of this year. Since then, I've been splitting my time evenly between Central MA and Central MX -no simple feat. Things have been going well, but I am now so busy tending the new business, commuting, doing inspections here, and spending time with my sons, that I've reached the point where I'm unable to give the chapter the time and attention it needs, and with sincere regret, I must finally concede that I need to step down and let someone else take over. This pains me as I have only begun to repay the debt I owe this chapter for all it has given me. Add the fact that I am someone who prides himself on completing what I begin; and this is easily the most difficult President's Message I've written to date, but certain realities cannot be ignored for long.

I don't want to leave without notice and drop the job in our Vice President's lap, so the board has decided that a special election will be held to ensure an orderly transfer of responsibility. At least one person has indicated their desire to run for President of the chapter, and there may be others. If you're interested in running, please speak with the Nominating Committee Chairman, Paul Kristenson. I'll continue to serve until the next President is elected, a few months from now at most.

On a personal note, I hope to sell my home inspection firm and begin working full time at Casas del Mar. Many of you also know, I have two young sons in MA, so I will not be moving Mexico full time (as much as I love living here). I hope you'll all keep in touch every now and again, and it goes without saying that if you're ever in Puerto Vallarta.

I've been on and off the board for 8 years now and have never worked with a more thoughtful, well intentioned bunch than your current Board of Directors. Things are going very well for the chapter these days and you have them (and the committee chairs) to thank for it. Please make it a point to buy them each a beer and give them a pat on the back. They have worked hard for us all, putting in more hours than you know in an effort to make sure our ship stays on course.

It is even more difficult for me to leave the chapter. I have been attending ASHI NE meetings regularly for the last 16 years (my first meeting ever was the Chicago National Conference in 1989). You are my colleagues, my mentors, my friends. Some of you I knew before I started shaving, and I've watched others get into this business and grow into real players in our market, and the profession as a whole. It isn't overstating it to say that many of us consider ASHI NE as something of a family. I know I do. We've weathered many storms together, seen many changes to the profession, we've helped one another, eaten together, drank together, sang together (it's true), laughed together, fought against one another, for one another but at the end of the day, stood together. If there's a better description of "family" I haven't seen it. You are my brothers and sisters and that won't change when I hang up my Mag light.

I will be at the next meeting, but we don't meet in the summer and it's difficult for me to plan beyond that. So while I am not leaving immediately, the wheels have been set in motion and I am a short-timer. Thank you all for your support, friendship, and guidance over the years. This chapter has helped shape who I am and I'll forever be indebted to you all.

Be well, and please remember to stay in touch (especially if you want to buy a 40' fiberglass ladder ).
Your friend and President Pro Tem, Jim Morrison

Chapter Education

We have a great all day and evening program on June 28th. I encourage you to register today for this great opportunity.

All-Day Seminar Earn 6 MRC's/CEU's
Bill Kille, owner and founder of Acu'Spect Home Inspections of Sonoita, AZ will travel East to be with us for an in-depth look at the 3-D Inspection System and Report Writing. More than just a casual user of the system, Bob has put the system through its paces and will highlight its benefits and discuss some of its quirk along with showing us how to get out of the system what we need most -- high-quality, comprehensive home inspection reports in a variety or formats and styles.
During the second half of the seminar program, Bill will offer a comprehensive look at Conducting Phase Inspections for New Construction including the benefits and challenges of conducting phase inspections. He will focus attention on the importance of establishing and maintaining good lines of communication between builder, consumer and the home inspector.

Evening Program Earn 3 MRCs/CEUs
For our evening program, we've arranged for something not to be missed...Mark Tibbets from the ICC will offer a specially-designed version of his presentation on the 7th Edition: Massachusetts Building Code -- Highlights and Important Changes. If you were unable to attend the sessions held by the Commonwealth back in April, this is your golden opportunity. It is not every day that we have the chance to speak to the answer man when it comes to matters of building codes. Our goal is to pack the house the evening of June 28, please make plans to join us.

I look forward to seeing all of you on June 28. We will be taking a very brief break from our schedule during July and August and will resume our programming starting on September 24-25 during our annual conference.
Bob Mulloy, Education Chairman

Annual Fall Conference

ASHI logo

After many months of work over this past winter and spring, I am very excited to announce that the advance program is ready and registration is now open for our annual fall conference to be held Monday, September 24 and Tuesday, September 25 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center on Cedar Lake in Sturbridge, MA.

I think you will find the ASHI-NE Chapter's 2007 Annual Fall Conference to be more diverse than past years in terms of programming and that we have raised the bar in terms of the caliber of our speakers -- most of whom have national acclaim in our industry and others.

We will have an opportunity to kick-back a bit on Monday evening as we enjoy the hospitality and fare of our host hotel during our first ASHI-NE Conference BBQ. (The cost of which is included in your registration fee.) Be sure to take advantage of our early-bird discounts and save! While you will save the most by using the available two-day discount (and by registering before Sept. 10), our early-bird discounts also apply to one- day registrations as well.

MRC REMINDER! Conveniently, the conference takes place just before the end of ASHI's MRC calendar (Sept. 30), so our conference is just the place to earn 12 MRCs before the ASHI deadline! Of course you will also earn 12 CEUs good for state licensure in both MA and CT. NACHI MRC's too.

Green Building

The board of directors of the National Association of Home Builders has approved the creation of a national green building program to provide a template for voluntary, market-driven green building all over the country. The vote came during the NAHB Spring Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. on June 10.

The new program will be based on the National Green Building Standard, a model for residential construction and renovation written by builders, architects, environmentalists and product experts that will be released in early 2008. This standard is the result of a cooperative effort between NAHB and the International Code Council and is based on NAHB's Model Green Home Building Guidelines, which are the foundation of more than 20 green building programs created by state and local home builder associations throughout the country.

"With a national program, home buyers can be assured that their home is truly green, whether they live in Seattle or Savannah, in a condo or a ranch house, and whether they're renovating or buying new," said NAHB President Brian Catalde, a home builder from El Segundo, Calif. "It's also the next logical step for NAHB as a leader in the green building movement. Our members have built nearly 100,000 green homes in voluntary programs launched by home building associations all over the country. Each of these homes is unique and responds to local geography, climate and consumer preferences. With an affordable national program, we will provide home buyers with green homes even where there is no local program in place," Catalde said.

Like the Model Green Home Building Guidelines and the Standard, the National Green Building Program takes into account a home's lot development, use of resources, energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, durability and ease of maintenance, as well as the builder's efforts to educate home owners. The program will be housed at the NAHB Research Center, which is also serving as the secretariat for the residential green building standard development process. The standards process is certified by the American National Standards Institute, for which the Research Center is an accredited developer.

The National Green Building Program will include an interactive, web-based certification system as well as other tools and resources for builders and certifiers, and a national registry of green builders and green homes. Existing local programs that meet quality assurance benchmarks and performance criteria can become part of the national program -- without costly additional certification fees. "When it comes to residential building and remodeling, NAHB members are leading the way to creating a new, green-built nation," Catalde said. "With the resources and expertise of the NAHB Research Center, our new national program will help accelerate that process."
