Dear Walter,

A very happy and prosperous 2007 to you all! Many of us felt the slight uptick in business resulting from the increase in real estate sales reported last month, and all of us are looking for that trend to continue throughout the coming year.

Looking back on 2006, I am pleased with the number of goals our chapter reached, and am eager to leverage that success into 2007.

I have a small personal favor I’d like to ask each one of you. Please spend some time thinking about how you could better contribute to the chapter. We have a good management company, but many people don’t realize that we are also largely volunteer-driven.

This chapter could not function without the constant flow of fresh ideas and hard work done by committee members. They are the people who have made us one of the best and most successful chapters in the world’s greatest home inspector organization. And we need your help to keep it that way.

Soon we will be asking you to join a committee, but you don’t have to wait to be asked. Please consider which committee your talents would be best suited for and join one today. Or, if a committee chair invites you to join their team, please accept. Many hands make light work, and you’ll be making a positive contribution to our noble profession, setting us even further apart from the internet-based, so- called HI associations.

For those of you attending InspectionWorld in Anaheim, CA, we’d love for you to tell us how it went at the January meeting. And if any of you are interested in participating in a (paid) field research study on weather resistant electrical receptacles, for NEMA click here.

As always, the Board of Directors is working hard to make sure the coming year is a financial and educational success. If there’s ever something we can do for you, we hope you’ll let us know.
Jim Morrison, President

Welcome to our first evening program of 2007 as we look toward the roof for a presentation on the proper installation and maintenance of gutters. Jack Lopes of New England Gutter Kings will discuss the types and styles of gutters commonly installed, gutter components and how to inspect them and options to ensure their longevity. We then turn our attention to the proper installation and latest designs of bulkheads. Bulkheads can be challenging to report on especially since their initial installation can make a huge difference in problems such as moisture/water intrusion and access by animals and security issues. While often taken for granted by homeowners, matters of insulation and exterior maintenance are important factors to consider as well. If you thought there wasn’t much to know about bulkheads think again and plan to join us. We will wrap things up with a Round Table Discussion on tools.

In an effort to maintain a consistent presence at the State House and, at the same time, reduce the financial burden that out Members have been carrying in order to keep an active lobbyist for our profession on Beacon Hill, the Board has been working to establish a statewide Home Inspectors Political Action Committee. It is only fair that all Home Inspectors in the State, not just ASHI Members, contribute to efforts that benefit all the Massachusetts Home Inspectors. This sort of committee has been very effective for other professional organizations. It’s now time for all Home Inspectors, regardless of professional affiliation, to speak with a larger voice!

We now have a tax identification number and a bank account for the PAC, and we’re looking into establishing by-laws for this organization. We have recently ended our contract with our lobbyist, Anne Lynch Associates, and Anne has generously donated the time and expertise of herself and her staff to help set up the PAC as well as help with our fund raising efforts. This will be a great help in getting the PAC up and running, and we would like to thank Anne for her offer to help.

In the next two weeks, Board Members will begin a campaign to telephone all non-ASHI Home Inspectors in the State to begin funding the PAC. Recognizing that ASHI Members have borne the cost of lobbying efforts until now, we have decided to approach non-ASHI Home Inspectors first. We anticipate requesting an annual contribution of $95.00 This is less than the amount ASHI Members have been contributing this past year through their dues. By spreading the load, we can put our Members’ dues back to work for Chapter initiatives. In order to have the contributions this low, however, we will need a very broad based support. As Home Inspectors represent a relatively small group in a sea of larger players, the Board unanimously feels that it is vital that we have an on-going presence at the State House to look out for the interests of our profession and to educate legislators about what we do and what our needs are.

It’s important that we make the PAC work. Over the next few months, talk the PAC up to any Home Inspector you know or meet. If we all pay a little, we can accomplish a lot for all of us!

On December 19th, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Crown Boiler Company of Philadelphia, PA, recalled about 400 Bermuda BSI and Cayman CWI series boilers due to a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard. Consumers are warned to stop using these switches immediately unless otherwise instructed.

According to the manufacturer, these boilers can produce unacceptably high levels of CO in the flue, thus posing a risk of poisoning. Though the manufacturer hasn't received any reports of injuries, they have received one report of high levels of CO in flue gases.

The recall involves Bermuda BSI and Cayman CWI Series gas-fired boilers designed for indoor installation. The model and serial numbers included in the recall can be found at the CPSC web site, and are located on the rating plate. The boilers have a two-tone, red and gray jacket enclosure with the controls and piping on the right side of the unit. The rating plate is a silver label located in the upper left hand corner of the right side panel.

The boilers are made in the United States and were sold through plumbing and heating wholesale distributors to plumbers and contractors nationwide from October 2002 through October 2006 for between $800 and $2,100. The manufacturer recommends that consumers who have not already been contacted by their contractor should immediately contact their installer or Crown Boiler Co. to arrange for a free repair and reminds consumers to install a CO alarm outside all sleeping areas, or make sure their current CO alarms have working batteries.
