Dear Matt,

The entire Board of Directors is excited to announce that Mark Forkey has been selected to Chair our very important Public Relations Committee. This committee touches every aspect of what the chapter does and Mark brings a strong background in corporate and not-for-profit PR to the job. Together, with PR veteran Lenny Liciari, they are going to make sure the public knows who ASHI NE is, and what we’re doing.

Their first priority will be Our Fall Conference on September 21st and 22nd at the Marriott Hotel in Newport, RI. This conference is a must for lovers of old homes. As you know, Newport is home to some true classics and we’ll be touring them with local experts. We’re also bringing in some big name lecturers like Bill Kibbel and Peter Drenan, ensuring this will be our biggest and best conference yet. Bill and Peter perform home inspections every day and have tailored their presentations to give us practical information we’ll be able to use and incorporate into our reports as soon as we get home. This is a great opportunity to ask a true expert the questions you’ve always wanted to get answered, -as well as dispel widely held myths about old homes and construction techniques. The brochures are nearly finished, and when you get yours, be sure to register right away. This seminar has already been approved for continuing education credits by MA, CT, ASHI, and NACHI) NB: (This will be your last opportunity to earn ASHI© MRC’s before the cutoff date of 9/30/06)

Business has been slow for just about every HI in the country this year, with the exception of a few isolated markets. Everyone knows that the real estate market we work in is cyclical, and the boom we enjoyed beginning in the late 90’s had to end some time. There’s no way to know for sure, but a lot of people think our market is about midway through the down cycle. House prices have fallen about 5% from this time last year, inventories are doubled in many markets, and the length of time it takes for a house to sell has about doubled too. That all combines to mean a little less work for us all, increasing competition. Competition is a necessary component of business, and is what keeps us responding to the needs of our clients and the marketplace. However, let’s remember that ASHI© NE members hold themselves to a higher standard. As you re-evaluate your business plan during this slow cycle, and consider alternative practices to respond to changing times, we must all remember to hold ourselves to the highest ethical, professional, and technical standards in our field. ASHI© is a culture of excellence, and we must all do our part to make sure it remains so.

Since we don’t meet again as a chapter until September, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy summer. This weather is our reward for doing inspections in the knee-deep snow and arctic winds of February. Remember, the Board of Directors is still going to meet on the fourth Thursday of July and August. Please keep in touch with us –at least by reading this newsletter so you’ll always know what the chapter is up to.

Did you know that the Board meetings are open to all members?
We’d like to see more members come to our meetings. It’s a great way to learn how the chapter works and offer your input.
Enjoy the summer and please never hesitate to email me with a question or concern.
Jim Morrison, President

MA Home Inspector PAC

The Board of Directors has voted to proceed with the establishment of a Political Action Committee (PAC) fund at a recent meeting. As many of you know, PACs can only receive money from individuals, not corporations. The Chapter could do one of two things if we proceed with the PAC. We could lower dues by roughly the amount we would hope that people would contribute to the PAC (approx. $75-$100 per year depending on participation) or we could maintain our dues at the current level and use the dues to benefit the Chapter as they are intended to, and encourage people to contribute that same 75-100 dollars to the PAC. The overwhelming consensus among Members at the meeting was that we should maintain current dues, and that they would be willing to contribute additional money to this important effort. To make this PAC work, we will need everyone’s participation in reaching out to non-ASHI inspectors to encourage them to contribute. A mail and phone campaign will be developed as we will no doubt have to contact people multiple times. This will not be promoted as an ASHI activity, but as a broad based initiative of Massachusetts Home Inspectors. A separate Board will be created of ASHI and non ASHI inspectors. This will take some work, but it is important that we succeed. If any Member is interested in helping in this effort (a large or small amount), or if anyone has ideas on how best to promote this other inspectors, etc., please let yourself be known to one of the Board Members.
Mike Atwell, Vice President

Chapter Education Library

The ASHI NE Chapter maintains a library of educational books, video tapes and CD’s for Chapter members and candidates to utilize for personal and business growth. Those who wish to sign materials out may do so for a fee of $16 per item ($10 per tape) which covers two-way shipping and handling. Library materials may be used for a two week period, beginning on the date of shipment. Those who fail to return library materials on time will be assessed a fine of $1 / day. If the materials are not received back within two months of date of shipping, you will be charged the cost of replacement. To sign materials out, there is a form that is posted on our web site that is to be completed and sent to the executive office. It is always recommended that you call the executive office to check on the availability of an item. Once this form is received, the executive office will ship the items out with a postage paid return envelope. The list of the materials that are currently available in the chapter library is on the web site as well.
